Common questions

I don't know who was driving.

You have a legal duty to identify the driver, and failing to do so is a separate offence carrying six points — usually worse than the speeding itself. You must make reasonable enquiries, and say so if you genuinely cannot say.

Is there a time limit for the notice?

A notice of intended prosecution must generally be served on the registered keeper within fourteen days of the offence. Late service can invalidate the proceedings, though there are exceptions.

Should I take the speed awareness course?

If offered, it usually avoids points and a conviction, though it is not available for higher speeds or if you have taken one recently. Generally it is the better option where eligible.

How many points before I'm banned?

Twelve points within three years generally triggers a six month disqualification under the totting up provisions. Newly qualified drivers face revocation at six points.
